Estevan-Flores.jpgDr. Flores, a sociologist, is Executive Director of the Latin American Research and Service Agency, LARASA, in Denver. He was formerly Chief of Population Science & Cancer Control at the Nevada Cancer Institute in Las Vegas. Previously he was Executive Director of the Latino/a Research & Policy Center at the University of Colorado Denver (1997-2007), and an Associate Professor in the Department of Health and Behavioral Sciences. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Texas (Austin) and M.A. from the University of Notre Dame.

 

Dr. Flores is a successful Network builder, grant writer and fund raiser.  Dr. Flores was funded by the National Cancer Institute ($2.5M), for the "Colorado Front Range Community Network," in 2005 creating a Network of over 20 community based organizations in partnership with 15 scientific organizations. He has been funded for over $7.5M in research over his career. He has 11 years experience in leading a non-profit organization. He led an LRPC staff successfully addressing health, education and immigration issues. The LRPC convened annual bipartisan statewide policy forums and annual health fairs for health promotion and disease prevention. Dr. Flores fields of expertise include health and health disparities, cancer prevention, community based interventions, and U.S.-Mexico relations. Dr. Flores was awarded the Thomas Jefferson Award by the University of Colorado system for excellence in scholarship, leadership and public service.

 

Dr.  Flores served on the first "National Minority Advisory Committee" to eliminate health disparities for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (2000-04) appointed by Dr. Donna Shalala. He served on the Colorado Board of Public Health, 1994-99, overseeing administration and their $100M+ budget. More recently, Dr. Flores served on the 9Health Inc., Board of Trustees, assisting in developing plans for more community based coverage.

 

Dr. Flores has chosen to apply his scholarly knowledge to make changes in the communities he serves. His work has sought to make a difference in health outcomes and improve the quality of life for Coloradans. Professor Flores published work appears in U.S. journals like Cancer (2006), and the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, (2006, 2004). In his early career he published on immigration in International Migration Review with a co-authored monograph The Migration and Settlement of Undocumented Immigrant Women (1986). Dr. Flores has published over 70 opinion-editorial essays for newspapers like the Denver Post and the Dallas Morning News. Dr. Flores appears in the media as he addresses issues on health, cancer and immigration.

Dr. Flores was a Kellogg National Leadership Fellow (1990-93) and co-founded the Hispanic Health Coalition of Colorado (1991-94) and the very successful Latino Campaign for Education. Dr. Flores has taught at a number of universities including the University of Colorado at Boulder (1987-1996) where he was tenured. He recently served as an Advisor to the Mexican government (2006-08) with the Institute for Mexicans Abroad.

 

Dr. Flores’ 7 year old, 18 pound cat, is "Domino."  Estevan bowls around 175, and his now 2 and 1/2 year old golf game suffers at around 100.
