LARASA's Public Policy Committee is responsible for:

  • monitoring policy which could potentially effect Colorado’s targeted populations on a national, state, and local level;
  • informing and educating Colorado’s Latino Community on issues of importance to the community, particularly in the areas of health, education, and immigrant justice;
  • serving as ambassadors, after an affirmative vote from a majority of the Board of Directors, by articulating support or opposition to proposed or existing policies in public or private forums; and
  • providing multicultural leadership development opportunities and collaborating with other LARASA Committees in seeking funds to support such development programs. 

  Individuals, groups, and/or organizations bringing issues and/or measures to LARASA’s Public Policy Committee for consideration and support, must ensure the issue and/or measure falls in line with the following criteria:

· Must meet LARASA’s mission, vision, purposes, and strategic plan.

· Must broadly impact the Latino community.

· Must improve public policies and leadership impacting the Latino community.

· Must increase education and awareness of the Latino community.

· Must help build LARASA’s credibility and visibility in the community.

LARASA’s Public Policy Committee when considering an issue and/or measure must answer the following questions:

· Will LARASA’s public support significantly affect outcomes/results?

· Can LARASA’s position be stated in a positive manner?

LARASA’s PRIORITY ISSUES:

· Health

· Education

· Immigration Justice

OTHER ISSUES THAT LARASA MAY CONSIDER:

· Law Enforcement/Justice System

· Employment and Economic Development

· Housing

· Public Services

GUIDELINES FOR BRINGING AN ISSUE TO LARASA's ATTENTION:
  • Any member of LARASA's Board of Directors or any community representative(s), advocate(s) or elected official(s) may request action or bring issues to LARASA’s Public Policy Committee for review and consideration.
  • LARASA's Directors or community representative(s), advocate(s) or elected official(s) must prepare an issue paper (following a set criteria) and present it to LARASA's Pubic Policy Committee for consideration. The issue paper may be produced in a Word document and delivered to the Public Policy Committee via mail, fax or email; or the information may be submitted online.
  • LARASA's Public Policy Committee will review the issue paper and with concurrence with the LARASA’s Executive Committee will take the issue to LARASA's Board of Directors for action at a regular scheduled meeting.  When exigencies require action, they may also be taken by conference call or e-mail.
  • LARASA's Public Policy Committee will report its recommendations, decisions, progress of the issue to LARASA's Board of Directors in a timely manner.
  • LARASA's Public Policy Committee will track the issues supported by LARASA's Board of Directors and will be included in LARASA’s annual accomplishment report.
